North Plainfield police chief's son has license suspended in DWI charge
NORTH PLAINFIELD — Police Chief William Parenti’s son, a police officer on the force, faces an internal affairs probe after pleading guilty Tuesday to drunken driving.
William “Billy” Parenti Jr. pleaded guilty in Mansfield Municipal Court, where a judge suspended Parenti’s driver’s license for three months and fined him several hundred dollars in fees, penalties and surcharges. The sentence is the minimum mandatory fine and penalty.
The charge stemmed from a May 2013 incident in which Billy Parenti was found stopped on Mount Bethel Road in Warren Township. Police said he was intoxicated, but Parenti refused to take a breath test.
Parenti had not been in an accident, was not seen driving drunk and there were no injuries in the incident, according to police reports at the time.
Chief Parenti said the department’s internal affairs investigation had been on hold pending the outcome of the Municipal Court case.
