Neighbor: Conditions Improving For Woman, Premature Baby Delivered After DWI Accident

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Through the use of a translator, the family of the pregnant woman who was struck by an allegedly drunk off-duty FDNY firefighter in the Bronx says the woman and her premature baby girl are showing signs of improvement.
“Baby is now very nice, is good. And last night, she feel good now,” the neighbor said on behalf of the family.
As 1010 WINS’ Juliet Papa reported Friday, 42-year-old Mamtaz Begun was seven months pregnant when she was hit by a car driven by Sean Farrell, a lieutenant with the FDNY’s Battalion 16 in Harlem.
The accident happened at the intersection of White Plains Road and Westchester Avenue around 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Begun was walking across the street with a 39-year-old friend when they were struck. She was on the way home from a doctor visit at the time of the accident, Papa reported.
Begun was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where the baby girl was delivered successfully.
Farrell remained at the scene of the accident, told officers he had drank two beers and refused to take a Breathalyzer test, police said. He was charged with DWI and refusing to take a breath test.

DWI patrols increased for spring break

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers will increase DWI patrols now through March 23, coinciding with spring break. DPS troopers will focus on DWI patrols in locations when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent and areas with high concentrations of spring break activity.
During last year’s spring break, DPS troopers made more than 1,000 DWI arrests. DPS enforcement also issued more than 11,400 speeding citations, 1,600 seat belt/child safety seat tickets, and made 552 fugitive arrests and 463 felony arrests last year during spring break.
DPS spokeswoman Elena Viramontes said she did not know the exact number of DWI patrols that will be added during spring break, but that “everyone that is available will be working.”
“All of us go out and work throughout that period,” Viramontes said. “We’re just trying to make sure that all the citizens are safe.
DPS officials advise drivers to slow down, eliminate distractions like cell phones while driving, use their seatbelts and refrain from driving fatigued. They also asked drivers to make sure their vehicles are properly maintained before taking a trip.
The enhanced patrols that target intoxicated drivers are funded by a Texas Department of Transportation grant.
TxDOT spokesperson Mark Cross said it was important for the agency to issue a grant for this time frame due to the rising number of fatalities occurring on Texas roads in connection with alcohol consumption.
During the 2013 spring break period, 30 percent of all people killed on Texas roadways were involved in a DUI alcohol related crash, and DUI deaths increased by 23 percent compared to 2012.

Students learn dangers of DWI

College students soon to go on Spring Break are learning about the deadly consequences of drinking and driving, without downing mixed drinks or putting themselves in danger. The Injury Prevention Coalition of Southeast Texas and Lamar University set up a demonstration today at Lamar to help students see and feel what it's like to drink and drive.

Students put on "fatal vision goggles," which are goggles that distort vision and simulate what it's like to be intoxicated. Then, they attempted to walk a straight line. It's one of the tests officers use to help decide if someone's drunk. With the goggles on, it was nearly impossible to pass.

At another station, students wore the goggles and attempted to drive a simulator. Adonis Bateaste attends Lamar University, and gave it a whirl.

"It was hard. It puts in the delayed reaction for you, and trying to over correct yourself whenever you're drunk driving," said Bateaste. "If that's how it is to drive drunk I'm pretty sure it's impossible."

That's the point the Injury Prevention Coalition wants to drive home to students.

"I think they don't realize what the consequences are when they're in that vehicle," said Department of Public Safety Trooper Stephanie Davis, "until they put those fatal vision goggles on, and they actually wreck out, or they crash with a police officer or crash in a head on, on video."

Volunteers on Segways drove around campus to attract more students to the simulation.

Man accused of DWI, driving wrong way on Saw Mill

YONKERS (WABC) -- A Yonkers man is under arrest on a DWI charge after police say they prevented him from driving the wrong way on the Saw Mill Parkway Tuesday morning.

Westchester County Police say Kenneth Breil, 42, was observed asleep at the wheel of a Chevy Tahoe facing east on Executive Boulevard adjacent to the Saw Mill River Parkway.

An officer knocked on the car's windows and shouted at the driver but was initially unable to awaken him.

When Breil awakened, according to police, he ignored the officer's command to shut the vehicle off and then drove away, going through a red light and crossing both the southbound and northbound lanes of the Saw Mill River Parkway.

The vehicle then drove the wrong way on the exit ramp used by motorists exiting from the northbound lanes of travel.

An officer used his patrol car to block the Tahoe from driving from the exit ramp into the lanes of oncoming traffic.

Breil was charged with a felony count of Driving While Intoxicated due to a previous DWI conviction. He was also issued several summonses.

Kerry Kennedy acquitted at DWI trial

WHITE PLAINS, New York - Kerry Kennedy, daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was acquitted in New York on Friday of charges of driving under the influence of a drug.

A jury deliberated for an hour and 10 minutes following a four-day trial that featured Kennedy's turn on the witness stand.

After jurors left the courtroom, Kennedy friends and family members, including her 85-year-old mother, Ethel Kennedy, applauded. Kennedy hugged lawyers, William Aronwald and Gerald Lefcourt, and, in an unusual move, shook the hands of the prosecutors.

As people filed out of courtroom, Kennedy told reporters she was not angry with the prosecutors who brought the case.

The 54-year-old former wife of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo faced a charge of driving while impaired after swerving off the road in her Lexus SUV and careening into a tractor-trailer on a New York interstate in morning rush-hour traffic in July 2012.

Lackawanna man pleads guilty in his sixth DWI case

A Lackawanna man with five felony DWI convictions has pleaded guilty in a Hamburg drunken driving crash that seriously injured his passenger and ended with the suspect wading into Lake Erie as he tried to flee.

Douglas Kersten, 43, pleaded guilty this week in State Supreme Court to first-degree vehicular assault and felony driving while intoxicated in connection with the May 18 crash.

Prosecutors said Kersten, another man and a woman spent the morning and early afternoon drinking at a party in Lake Erie Beach in the Town of Evans. They said Kersten stole the woman’s car keys and drove off with the other man.

Kersten lost control of the car and vaulted down an embankment along the lake in Hamburg, ejecting his companion who suffered a traumatic brain injury, prosecutors said.

Kersten punched a good Samaritan who tried to help him, prosecutors said. Kersten then ran away and waded into the lake where the Erie County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was called to assist Town of Hamburg police in rescuing him.

Police took him into custody and obtained a court order to draw his blood. Testing showed he had Xanax, a drug prescribed to treat panic and anxiety disorders, and marijuana in his system and that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.16 percent, which is twice the legal limit for DWI.

Missouri State Highway Patrol to set up DWI checkpoints

MACON, MO. -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging drivers to think twice before drinking and driving.

'Troop B' troopers will be conducting DWI enforcement operations in Adair and Marion counties in March.  Saturation checkpoints will be set up on highways that have had a history of DWI crashes. The patrol is committed to removing intoxicated drivers from the highways, and monitoring speed and other violations that cause crashes.  Sergeant Brent Bernhardt encourages motorists to protect themselves by having a designated driver if they do plan on drinking.  Bernhardt says over 30% of the traffic crashes in the state of Missouri are a direct cause of drivers driving under the influence.
