Woman charged in DWI killing has record of drug convictions

A woman who police say was driving while impaired and texting when she struck and killed a 75-year-old woman has a lengthy criminal history with multiple convictions for drug crimes.

Belinda Strange Hudspeth, 45, was in Gaston County Jail on Sunday, charged with second-degree murder, driving while impaired, texting while driving, careless and reckless driving, and driving without carrying a license, according to Trooper J.J. Waters.

Waters said Hudspeth was traveling east on Perfection Avenue in an SUV around noon Saturday when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road, striking Lavon Ramsey, who was walking in a yard on her way to visit a neighbor.
