East Village DUI checkpoint nets 16
A San Diego Police Department DUI checkpoint in downtown’s East Village neighborhood Saturday night netted 16 arrests and 18 vehicle impounds, police said.
The checkpoint on G Street near 14th Street between 10:50 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. had 1988 vehicles pass through with 793 vehicles screened by officers and 25 motorists detained for a further evaluation.
Of the 16 people arrested, three were persons on probation for prior DUI offenses.
Police said the point of the checkpoint, made possible by a California Office of Traffic Safety “DUI Mini Grant,” is to remind drivers not to operate a vehicle if they plan to drink.
