Cop killer Albert Victory, held in DWI, is livin' the high life after Attica

Cop killer Albert Victory, held in DWI, is livin' the high life after Attica

With a six-figure income, a long list of assets and a nifty wardrobe, post-prison life for paroled cop killer Albert Victory has been a breeze.

Victory's lawyer Gary Conroy told a Brooklyn judge at the ex-con's arraignment Monday that the seasoned 68-year-old thug shouldn't have to sit behind bars for allegedly driving drunk Sunday.

The dapper hoodlum spent nearly half his life locked up, convicted of the 1968 killing of Officer John Varecha outside the now shuttered Arthur Discotheque on Manhattan's E. 54th St. and now deserves to keep his freedom, his lawyer said.

"He is not happy in jail," Conroy said.

The construction company exec refused to take a breath test after cops stopped him for driving the wrong way on a one-way street in Brighton Beach.

Victory told authorities that he drank just two beers. Judge Stephanie Zaro set bail at just $1 for the DWI bust, angering prosecutors - but ordered Victory not be released because he violated parole.

Victory's arrest outraged cops. Retired Detective Randy Jurgensen, who cuffed Victory after the Varecha shooting, said all he thought about Monday was the slain officer's mother.

"I am the last one with her son as he died on the sidewalk. Now, she has to go through this again," he said.

At 79, Helen Varecha said she is still dealing with her son's murder and is tired of seeing Victory in a courtroom.

"He will never be a good man," she said. "He will always be a bum."

Victory was convicted of Varecha's slaying in 1970. He escaped from his cell in 1978 and was on the lam for three years before he was recaptured and sent to Attica prison.

He was released on parole in 1999 after a judge reversed the state Parole Board's refusal to free him.
